From The East
From the East - January 2012

Ansantawae Lodge No. 89 was named after the Indian Sachem of the Paugusset Tribe, then encamping in Milford. At a meeting of Master Masons in the Town Hall on October 13, 1859, it was agreed to petition the Grand Lodge of the State of Connecticut for a dispensation empowering them to confer the three Degrees of Masonry. The first communication of the Lodge was held at the Odd Fellows Hall on October 24, 1859, with W.B. Thomas A. Dutton presiding in the East. The  actual charter was received on May 15, 1860. The lodge moved to its present quarters on Broad Street in 1878.

Why tell you this? Because our history is long, dignified and respected. I want to be able to say that I helped keep that esteemed legacy alive. And so with that, I am humbled and honored that the Office of Master be bestowed on me for the ensuing year of 2012.

Seven years ago, I started my journey to the Oriental Chair in the East, with the help of friend, whom I later found to be a Brother ‐ Seth Cohen. At that time in my life…more especially now…I am trying my best to make more “progress in the mystery” and of becoming a better man, a better husband and a better Father.
Some would say I still have a long way to go! Luckily, Seth saw something in me back then that he thought might warrant further investigation. Thank you Seth! To that end, I firmly believe thatsuccess is a journey, not a destination.  Another Brother asked me recently, “What is your main goal for your year?” I said, “To continue the tradition of bringing QUALITY into our lodge.” And it’s been described to me by another Brother, “that the sole task of a Blue Lodge is to make Masons.” I
agree with that, but, I also agree that they now need a reason to come back. Unfortunately, that reason lies within. We as the Officers cannot make anyone “come back to lodge.” Each Brother needs to feel the “zeal for the Institution of Freemasonry” on his own. I first became a Mason, to “subdue my passions and improve myself.” But that doesn’t necessarily mean that all of our members find that their first and foremost reason. I will however ask all Brothers to take responsibility for the Lodge.

In volunteering in some way to help with a Degree or dinner, we  appreciate you. If you take honor and diligence to perform some Ritual, we appreciate you. If you just show up, sit in a seat, watch a program or Degree and search for that one reason of why you became a Mason in the first place, we appreciate you. Above all,
know this ‐ we shall never forget you. 153 years ago W.B. Tom Dutton thought it well enough to start something worthwhile. As an Eagle Scout my Brothers, I offer you my solemn obligation and oath that “I will do my best to do my duty…” for us and the Brotherhood of Ansantawae Lodge #89.

Thank you again for letting me serve

Fraternally,
Robert L. Thomas
Worshipful Master
